Wave Systems
This Achievement Standard builds on your Level 2 knowledge of waves but does not include the optics (mirrors and lenses).
The topics covered include;
Standing Waves -waves formed by identical waves moving through each other in opposite directions. Most musical instruments make their sound as a result of standing waves.
The Doppler Effect -the change in the apparent frequency of a wave caused by the relative motion of the source and the observer. This is what causes the change in frequency as a ambulance, police or fire engine siren drives past you
Interference -when two or more waves pass through each other and their individual displacements combine to create a resultant wave. This is what cause the complex patterns of ripples on the surface of a pond.
