Scholarships
Introduction
There are two types of scholarship that you need to be aware of in Year 13.
- Scholarship Examinations
Scholarship examinations are a separate examination, offered in most subjects by NZQA and sat at the end of the year during NCEA examinations. They require a level of understanding beyond what is expected at NCEA Level 3. There are various amounts of money attached to them (depending on the examination score), but their main value is the opportunity to develop deeper understanding in a subject/s and some academic prestedge, which can be useful for entry into some university courses and for applications for financial scholarships. - Financial Scholarships
These are significant amounts of money that are offered by a number of individuals and organisations to help school leavers with further education. Most have some sort of criteria for eligibility. Some are linked to NCEA results, others to industries, accommodation, areas of study, leadership roles, sports, parental profession etc. These scholarships often make an important contribution to the substantial costs of tertiary education for students and their families. It is well worth spending some time having a thorough look at the options available.
